Grand Paris Express

The largest infrastructure and urban development project currently underway in Europe, the Grand Paris Express will double the length of the metro network with 200 km of new lines, including the creation of 4 new lines around Paris (lines 15, 16, 17 and 18), 90% of which will run underground, the extension of 2 lines (lines 11 and 14), 68 new stations and the development of new districts around these future urban-transport hubs. 3 million passengers will use these new lines every day.

The deployment and funding for this major urban-development project is being steered by the Société des grands projets (SGP), a public establishment created by the French government.

Since 2017, the Major Projects Division has leveraged its expertise to contribute to the construction of 14 stations, 38.6 km of tunnels, and 6.7 km of viaducts on lines 18, 15 South, 15 West South, and 14 South.

LINE 14 SOUTH

In February 2018, VINCI Construction Grands Projets won Lot GC02 for Line 14 South, which links Olympiades station (in Paris’s 18th arrondissement) to Orly Airport.

A 4.6 km tunnel between the future Maison Blanche Paris XIII station and the tunnel boring machine (TBM) insertion shaft at Jean Prouvé was built. The project also included the construction of the new Kremlin Bicêtre Hôpital station, five  ventilation and emergency-rescue shafts and filling in 14 quarry sites.

The ultimate aim of extending line 14 is to link Orly Airport to Saint-Denis Pleyel in 40 minutes. Nearly a million passengers a day are expected.

LINE 15 SOUTH

The contract concerned the civil engineering of a section linking the Fort d’Issy-Vanves-Clamart and Villejuif Louis Aragon stations, with the construction of 8 km of tunnel, 8 shafts and 5 new stations. One of the major features of this lot was the construction of the Villejuif Gustave-Roussy station, connecting line 15 south and line 14 south, with a diameter of 63 m and a depth of 50 m.

In addition to mobilising 1,000 employees during work peaks, the worksite provided more than 350,000 hours of work experience, thanks to the support provided by ViE (VINCI insertion Emploi).

LINE 15 WEST

As part of the first design-build contract for the Grand Paris Express, we are constructing 14 km of tunnels, 5 underground stations and 16 service structures. This first section of Line 15 West, located in a very densely populated urban area, will link Pont de Sèvres station to La Défense (Hauts-de-Seine).

It will provide an interconnection with Transilien lines L and U at Saint-Cloud and La Défense, with RER line E at Nanterre La Folie and with RER lines A and E, metro line 1 and Transilien line T2 at La Défense. It is scheduled to be in service by the end of 2031.

Over 2,000 people will work on the project at peak of construction and 10% of the hours of work will be allocated to people on integration programmes throughout the construction period.

UNDERGROUND SECTION OF LINE 18

This first underground section of line 18 will link Orly airport to Massy-Palaiseau. It will then be extended to Versailles.

The contract includes the digging of 11.8 km of tunnels, the construction of three stations (Antonypôle, Massy Opéra and Massy-Palaiseau), 13 ancillary structures, 10 connecting branches to the tunnel, and 850 linear metres of covered trench.

The site will employ up to 700 people at peak times, and the equivalent of 148 full-time jobs will be created through integration programmes over the 83 months of the project.

OVERHEAD SECTION OF LINE 18

The contract concerns the entire civil engineering for a 6.7 km viaduct, the voussoirs of which were prefabricated near the project.

Located on the central section of line 18, which will serve 10 stations between Orly airport and Versailles, this structure will contribute to the development of the Saclay plateau, a leading centre of excellence where university campuses, grandes écoles and R&D centres are concentrated.

The project employed 400 people at its peak, and the equivalent of 10 full-time integration jobs were created during the 30 months of construction.

The VINCI Group has set up its “Chantiers & Territoires Solidaires” endowment fund to support outreach projects promoting employment and social cohesion in the communities crossed by the Grand Paris Express construction sites.

The Grand Paris Express is a strategic project for the future and for the economic development of the Île-de-France region. It will make it possible to create jobs, to open up different areas and to free up energy and potential. This ambitious project will benefit from the Group’s expertise for the next 20 years. This is a fantastic technical endeavour but also a real human challenge
